The Space

Firstly let me apologize for not following through with keeping this up to date. I shall post images of the space and the event over the next couple of days and get this project signed off properly.

We'll start with Images of the space located at 126 Willis st, Wellington
To fill the space and to present the works I purchased over 200 plain white 400x200 cardboard boxes.

Setting up the space was no easy task. We had to construct a wall of pellets to block half the space as it far to vast for the number of works and cardboard boxes I had bought. Not to mention folding the 200 boxes and wiring 10 new lights just to get the space bright enough.

Many many thanks to Ash Smith, Lesa MacLeod, Jacob Daube and David Rowe for helping with the mammoth task of folding 200 boxes and joining 11 pellets. Thanks Dave for getting the pellets and to Jacob for wiring and hanging the 10 new lights.

Here it is, the final space with all 13 artists work. Thank you to all the artists who contributed, thanks to Regonal Wine and Spirits and Crazy Horse for help with the opening night drinks and thanks to Pizza Pomodoro for the opening night food.

Progress

We have all we need to make 10 stools, enough for everyone who has put there hand up. This is just the tip of the iceberg I hope. Those who think they might want another stool or just want to be involved, let me know and we'll get you in batch 2.

The cutting has been completed and we and glueing as I write this. Here are some more images of the process.

Just so you know this is not as exciting as it may look.

The stool making process begins.

The workshop has been cleared and the jigs made. Production is underway.

Look out for exhibition posters coming soon thanks to Matt Gleeson.

What this is about

For those who don't know me my name is George Whiting, I am an Industrial Design Graduate from Massey University. In our free time, David Rowe (flat-mate/craftsman) and I have been creating small furniture pieces, the most successful of which is a small stool(see attached images). To get an idea of scale think milking stool. They are 400mm high and 290mm wide.

We would like to set up a collaborative exhibition promoting artists and designers using this stool as a medium.

The idea is a fusion of furniture and art, where the blank canvas is a functional, practical item. We want the exhibition to be a chance for artist to promote themselves and maybe even make some money.

Basically me and David will supply you with as many stools as you would like at an approximate cost of $40 each. This does not have to be paid upfront and can be incorporated into the sale price of the final piece. We can supply the stools fully assembled or with the legs unattached (to be glued together at a later date). If you would like to alter the material or the stool in any way then feel free to ask us for assistance. We want this to be your project not ours, the stool is simply a medium for the exhibition.

We are looking to exhibit late November, December or at the very latest January. Sales wise November, December is better. We haven't booked a venue yet as I would like to get an idea of numbers before we commit to a location.

Sale prices will be decided by the artist, if they wish to sell there pieces. There is the possibility of this project continuing online after the exhibition depending on success and feedback.

I would also like to ask any photography types out there if they would be interested in documenting the whole process for final exhibition. This would include stool production, and a variety for artist in process.

Any questions or comments welcome. We want this to be as big as possible so pass this on to people you know, who know people.
